What is a Marriage License in NJ?
A marriage license in New Jersey is a legal document issued by the state authorizing a couple to marry. It is required before your wedding ceremony can legally take place.
Obtaining a NJ Marriage License
Schedule an Appointment: Contact your local municipality clerk’s office to schedule a marriage license appointment.
Apply for your marriage license in NJ in the municipality where either you or your partner resides. If you both live out-of-state, you’ll need to apply in the municipality where the wedding ceremony will occur. If you’re getting married at Crossed Keys Estate, contact Patty DeClesis, the Green Twp Deputy Clerk, at 908-852-9333 x 11 to schedule your Green Township marriage license appointment. Both applicants and a witness (18 years or older) must be present at the appointment.
NJ Marriage License Requirements:
- Completed New Jersey Marriage License Application (Form REG-77A, Box 12: Green Township)
- Proof of Identity (driver’s license, passport, or state/federal I.D.)
- Proof of Residency
- Social Security Numbers
- Witness (18 years or older)
- $28 Application Fee (cash or check)
- Final Divorce Papers or Death Certificate of Former Spouse (if applicable)
When to Apply for Your License:
- For Saturday or Sunday ceremonies, apply no later than the preceding Monday.
- There is a mandatory 72-hour waiting period after application submission before the license is issued.
- The NJ marriage license is valid for 30 days from the date of issuance.
On Your Wedding Day:
Allocate 5-10 minutes post-ceremony to soak in the just married moments and sign your marriage license with your officiant and witnesses.
Post-Wedding Day:
- The officiant or the couple must file the signed marriage license with the municipality where the ceremony was performed.
- All couples married at Crossed Keys Estate must file at the Green Township municipal office, 150 Kennedy Road, Tranquility, NJ 07879.
- Couples married offsite in a church, temple, or other place of worship must file in the municipality where the place of worship resides.
- Filing Options: Drop off Monday-Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM (confirm with Patti), or mail within five days.
- Failure to record the marriage certificate within five days may cause future inconveniences.
- Certified copies of the marriage certificate can be obtained from the local municipality.
